. 125 pages, 166 pieces; from No. 140 onwards these are without music though a table gives suggested tunes. The title page gives no date but the preface dated 1885 speaks of this as the first musical edition of a book previously published without music. "A few popular tunes have been drawn from other Hymnals, the majority having been written expressly for this work by many of the well-known composers of Church Music, whose names will guarantee the congregational spirit which is believed will be found to pervade all the Music". Hymns by Horatius Bonar, Frances Ridley Havergal, F W Faber, Sabine Baring-Gould, E Bickersteth, John Mason Neale and others. A number of tunes are by the Cellier brothers, Alfred, Charles, and Fran├žois.
