Whitley was brought up in the Catholic Apostolic Church though he describes his mother as having been brought up as a "Wee Free". His wife Elizabeth will be known to some customers as the author of "Plain Mr Knox" and "The Two Kingdoms" (both published by the Scottish Reformation Society), as well as being a social worker, a journalist, and an SNP candidate.
